The first time I tried the Desiderio was in 2011. I wasn’t that experienced in wine as I am now and bought 3 of the 2006 vintage. After the first bottle, I fell in love in this wine! I loved its character, the warmth, the density and the elegance it had.

So in 2012, I decided to have a trip in Cortona, where I visited the Avignonesi vinery. I had a great time there, as I had the 7 course lunch with all the best of avignosei wines served with it.

I can tell you, beside of the Desiderio, I fell in love in the ” Vin Santo di Montepulciano 1999 (not the occio di pernice)”. And to tell the one of you who usually don’t like the “coca cola wine”: The Vin Santo of Avignonesi is a wine of the finest art, something I have never drank before in my life and that tasted like heaven and that must be very, very close to perfection! If you have never trusted in good dessert wines, then try it out. There is no way you won’t like it until you are the type of person that will never enjoy sweet desserts.

But back to my old loved Merlot: hopefully I bought one (yes, only ONE!) bottle of the Desiderio 2010 and wanted to keep it for several years before trying… Well… now, I regret that I didn’t buy more and you will understand why…

Bouquet is a bit closed, but shows high elegance and a bunch of floral notes, spring meadow, some dried grass / hay, slight balsamic notes, earth, concentrated cherry, raspberry and sandalwood.

On the palate, a highly concentrated, but closed and excellently balanced wine with an outstanding texture. Tons of young tannins.

The finish is long and of great structure and shows still a bit toasted. The wood will dissapear with further cellaring!

Forecast: Don’t you dare! This is still a baby! Please wait at least 5 more years to drink. You will not regret! This wine is BIG and will gain much with further cellaring. The palate could reach +1 and the overall impression + 0,5 – 1! this would make it at least a 17 / 20 (~93 – 94 pts)

Wine Juggler Fazit: This wine is a sleeping giant! Despite I think it’s in its closed phase at the moment, you can taste and smell what treasure is kept inside.

I bet this Desiderio will be outstanding in 2020+ and will make you regret (like me) not having bought more, but you can be sure, that I will at least buy 3 more bottles and taste the next one in 2020.

Desiderio 2010 – Avignonesi – Merlot

Das erste Mal, als ich einen Desiderio trank war im Jahr 2011. Ich kannte mich damals noch nicht gut mit Weinen aus und habe “auf gut Glück” 3 Flaschen des 2006er Jahrgangs gekauft und mich prompt in diesen Wein verliebt.

Als ich dann 2012 Urlaub in der Toskana machte, nutzte ich die Gelegenheit nach Cortona zu fahren und das Weingut direkt zu besuchen. Zum 7 Gänge-Menü gab es “the best of the best” das Avignonesi zu bieten hat.

Ich hatte unter anderem das Vergnügen den “Vin Santo di Montepulciano 1999” zu testen und, da es mein Geburtstag war, mir kräftig nachschenken zu lassen. Ich kann euch sagen, dieser Dessertwein ist nahe an der Perfektion. Noch nie etwas so leckeres getrunken und wer meint, dass Dessertweine nichts sind und sie mit “Coca Cola” vergleicht, der kennt diese Weine sicherlich nicht.

Aber zurück zu meinem geliebtem Merlot: da er mich während der Verkostung damals nicht sonderlich überzeugt hat, habe ich nur eine Flasche gekauft. Nach den paar Jahren muss ich zugeben, dass ich es bereue und ihr werdet verstehen warum…

Das Bouquet ist verschlossen, aber höchst elegant mit einem erstaunlich floralen Touch für ein Merlot, ja gar Frühlingswiese. Etwas getrocknetes Gras und Heu, sehr leicht balsamisch mit konzentrierter und süßer Kirsche und Himbeere, Erde und Sandelholz.

Am Gaumen von sehr hoher Konzentration, allerdings auch hier verschlossen, aber dafür von ausgezeichneter Balance und Textur.Viele noch sehr junge Tannine, die aber dennoch sehr gut integriert sind.

Der Abgang ist von sehr guter Struktur und lang, zeigt sich allerdings noch etwas getoastet. Ich gehe aber stark davon aus, dass das Holz sich noch integrieren wird.

Prognose: Bitte nicht öffnen, es ist wirklich noch ein Baby und braucht noch mindestens 5 Jahre Zeit. Die Wartezeit wird sicherlich belohnt werden, denn die ganzen versteckten Aromen am Gaumen werden mit der Reife geradezu explodieren und einen phantastischen Wein zeigen. Ich denke, dass er am Gaumen noch locker +1 zulegen und im Gesamteindruck +0,5 – 1 (also mindestens 17 / 20 – respektive 93-94 pts).

Wine Juggler Fazit: aktuell für mich ein schlafender Riese! Auch wenn ich den Desiderio wohl in seiner “schlafenden Phase” erwisch habe, so erkennt man am Gaumen und im Bouquet das sich Potenzial dahinter verbirgt.

Ich wette, dass er ab 2020+ ausgezeichnet schmecken wird und viele (wie ich) bereuen werden, noch doch die eine oder andere Flasche mehr gekauft zu haben. Ich werde garantiert noch 2-3 nachkaufen und die nächste 2020 öffnen.
