2015 – A GOOD RIESLING YEAR?

Yesterday I had my first three 2015 Rieslings and I can say that I was really satisfied with their overall appearance. I tasted the wines from right to left. All three Rieslings are dry Gutsrieslings.

Hofmann – Riesling trocken (Rheinhessen)

The bouquet opens with peach, citrus peel, passion fruit and some hints of SO2 and yeast – still a little bit closed, but already pleasant. Medium-bodied appearance with a juicy, refreshing mouthfeel. There are a crispy, nearly sparkling acidity and also some salty notes. Pure citrus fruit also in the finish with a persistent mineral hint.

Rating: 14/20 – Good wine!

Pfaffmann – Riesling trocken (Pfalz)

Super-yeasty nose with bread crumbs, apple skin, smoke and nuts. Maybe a little bit closed as well? Light-bodied and easy-going with a mouthwatering acidity and also a hint of tannin. Typical green apple and lots of lemon juice at the palate. The finish shows off pretty refreshing and uncomplicated.

Rating: 13,5/20 – Good wine!

Manz – Riesling Kabinett trocken (Rheinhessen)

Dry Kabinett Gutswein, which already shows a pretty fruit-forward bouquet with peach blossoms, apricot, citrus zest and hints of almond. Pretty creamy mouthfeel with a smooth and mineral acidity. Lovely stonefruit flavours pair with some stoney notes. Elegant, but lively finish.

Rating: 15/20 – Very good wine!

Conclusion:

To summarize my 2015 Riesling Gutswein experience I have to admit that I already expected the wines to be more than average since 2015 was a very good year – when speaking agronomically. The wine that surprised me most, was the dry Kabinett by Manz. This could be my new summer wine. The one by Hofmann is promising, but maybe not at the top of his potential. The same holds true for the Pfaffmann, which could become a very good crowd pleaser! What all wines have in common, is the great price quality ratio (they are all below 8 €).
